Treatment for Low Levels of Testosterone
Since the majority of female patients with testosterone deficiency
exhibit one or more symptoms of reduced sexual drive, unexplained lethargy, fatigue and
altered mood, the treatment requires an integrated approach in coordination with a suitably
trained medical practitioner.
Prior to hormone therapy, the physician should address specific medical
conditions such as iron deficiency, abnormal bleeding, diabetes, depression, and thyroid disease.
During therapy, a doctor may recommend lifestyle changes such as exercise, weight loss, and the
reduction or elimination of smoking and alcohol intake.
To restore normal sexual functioning, a patient may have to apply
pessaries, vaginal tablets, creams, gels, and lubricants for the symptomatic relief for
vaginal dryness and dyspareunia (painful sexual intercourse). Likewise, the doctor may
prescribe pelvic floor physiotherapy to improve vaginal muscle tone and muscles associated
with orgasm.
Furthermore, the physician may prescribe appropriate medications that
do not interfere with sexual function, particularly oral hormone replacement therapy (HRT),
oral contraceptives, and antidepressants. If testosterone deficiency is established, the
doctor should incorporate supplements that increase the levels of this hormone in the body.
